Co-Dev

For studios needing senior technical capacity, Actuator joins your team to strengthen architecture, features, performance, and delivery process - so your game moves forward with confidence.

When your team needs senior capacity without losing ownership

A critical feature, technical bottleneck, or growing backlog can pull your team away from the work that matters most. Hiring permanently may take too long, while handing over the problem can create more integration risk.

Capacity gap

Your existing team needs experienced technical support for a defined challenge or demanding stage of delivery.

Growing complexity

Architecture, integrations, performance, or technical debt are making progress slower and harder to predict.

Need to keep moving

The project needs practical delivery support now, with your team still in control of the product and codebase.

A straightforward partnership with clear responsibilities

Co-Dev adapts to your team, tools, and project stage. We agree where support is needed before we start changing the code.

1. Define the challenge

Share the feature, bottleneck, milestone, or technical risk that needs senior attention.

2. Join the team

We align on architecture, responsibilities, communication, review practices, and the definition of done.

3. Deliver and strengthen

We implement, review, optimise, and transfer knowledge as the work moves into your team’s hands.

What you get

Senior technical support that helps solve the immediate challenge and leaves your team stronger for what follows.

Delivered features and fixes

  • Implement specialist features, integrations, fixes, or optimisation work.
  • Focus senior capacity on the bottleneck, milestone, or risk holding the project back.
  • Move the work forward in your codebase and delivery process.

  • Move the work forward in your codebase and delivery process.
Stronger technical foundations
  • Make architecture decisions that support the work now and later.
  • Improve code quality, performance, and maintainability where they matter most.
  • Reduce technical debt before it creates more friction for the team.
Knowledge that stays with you
  • Share code ownership, reviews, and practical technical guidance.
  • Document decisions and patterns your team can keep using.
  • Build confidence and capability alongside the delivery work.
Shared ownership
  • Work in your systems, with your team, rather than behind a handover boundary.
  • Keep decisions, progress, and technical context visible throughout the engagement.
  • Leave knowledge with the people responsible for the product after we step back.
Flexible support
  • Bring us in for a focused technical challenge or a defined milestone.
  • Add ongoing senior capacity when the project needs it.
  • Shape the level of support around your team, priorities, and stage of delivery.

What success looks like

Your team has more momentum now and a better foundation for the work that follows.

More delivery capacity

A demanding feature or technical problem gets experienced attention without waiting for a permanent hire.

Less technical drag

Performance constraints, architectural friction, and avoidable debt stop compounding around the team.

A stronger team

Your developers gain context, patterns, and confidence they can apply after the engagement ends.

Proof in practice

What Actuator did

Actuator provided programming and Steam API support, Steam Deck and macOS platform testing, and performance testing with recommendations for the game's release.

Challenge

Before moving from a vertical slice to full production, Abandoned Sheep needed confidence that its planned levels, assets, visuals, effects, and gameplay systems would run smoothly across consumer PCs, including Steam Deck.

Approach

Actuator conducted a short, intensive analysis of the Unity vertical slice with access to its source code and assets. We used Unity profiling and frame-debugger tools and RenderDoc to investigate known concerns, assess early levels, and identify performance-intensive areas.

Outcome

Actuator delivered a technical analysis report that identified graphics and rendering as the main contributor to overall performance pressure and documented its causes. We then discussed recommended methods, expected impact, developer questions, and value-versus-effort estimates for potential next steps.

Questions about co-development

Will Actuator replace or manage our development team?

No. We work alongside your team, agree responsibilities together, and contribute directly to the shared outcome.

Can you work with our existing tools and process?

Yes. The engagement is shaped around your codebase, engine or platform, workflow, review practices, and communication needs.

What kind of work is a good fit?

Feature development, architecture, performance, multiplayer or third-party integration, code quality, technical debt, and other defined delivery challenges are all suitable starting points.

How long does a co-development engagement last?

It can be sized around a focused task, milestone, or longer period of senior capacity. We agree the right shape after understanding the challenge.
